OSUN condemns the decision of a Chinese court to sentence Rahile Dawut, the internationally-recognized ethnomusicologist and folklorist of Uyghur culture, to life in prison. Dawut was named OSUN Honorary Professor of Humanities in 2020 and is a brilliant teacher and researcher whose work has guided a generation of young scholars worldwide in deepening our knowledge of Uyghur culture. For Alt New College’s inaugural lecture, Judith Butler, philosopher and distinguished professor in the Graduate School at the University of California, and Masha Gessen, distinguished writer in residence at Bard College, discussed global and US assaults on gender studies. Perceptions of disempowerment and resentment combined with unchecked aggressive impulses drive many of the attacks, they said.
