 Winter Sustainability Abroad Program 2026

Footprints and Futures: Learning Sustainable Tourism in Chiang Mai, Thailand

📍 Chiang Mai, Thailand

The program uses Chiang Mai and its surrounding communities as a “living classroom,” combining academic sessions with field visits, outdoor activities, community engagement, and cultural experiences.

Students will explore:

• Chiang Mai Old City – exploring cultural heritage and sustainable tourism
• Huay Tung Tao Cycling Field Study – discovering nature and community on two wheels while exploring sustainable tourism
• Mae Kampong Eco Village – learning about eco-tourism, local livelihoods, and community-based tourism
• Local Homestay Experience – connecting with local families and experiencing rural Thai culture
• Eco-tourism Workshop – taking part in a Tea Leaf & Herbal Pillow activity with the local community
• Elephant Nature Park – learning about elephant welfare, conservation, rehabilitation, and responsible tourism
• International Exchange – connecting with students from universities across the region and local CMU students

The 2026 edition will be an open, multi-university sustainability program, bringing together students from different universities and cultural backgrounds to learn, exchange perspectives, and build international connections.
