Driver’s License & Traffic Safety Notices

For students who stay in Taiwan for more than 30 days, an International Driver License Permit/Taiwan Driver’s License is required for driving in Taiwan. International Driving Permit is for individuals whose home country has a reciprocal licensing agreement with Taiwan; others will need to sit a written test and take a driving examination.

International Driving Permit (IDP)

Required Documents for Applying for International Driving Permit

  • Valid international driver’s license issued by home country
  • Valid domestic driver’s license issued by home country
  • Passport or residence permit
  • One 1 x 1 inch ID photo (taken within the last 6 months)

Note

  • You may drive in Taiwan for up to thirty days after landing without IDP.
  • After thirty days of landing, driving with IDP is warranted.
  • IDP is valid for a maximum of one year, subject to the validity of your original domestic driver’s license.

Taiwan Driver’s License

Required Documents for Applying for Taiwan Driver’s License

  • Valid ARC for one year
  • The original and a photocopy of the applicant’s passport
  • The original and a photocopy of the valid and official driver’s license issued by a foreign nation, and certificate
  • A completed driving license registration form and health report issued from an approved hospital or clinic
  • Fees: NT$200
  • Two 1 x 1 inch ID photos (taken within the last 6 months)

Note

  • Any documents not in Chinese or English should be accompanied by either a Chinese or English translation copy.
  • All foreign driver’s licenses should be certified by one of Taiwan’s embassies, consulates, or representative offices abroad, or by a foreign nation’s organization established in the ROC and recognized by Taiwan (ROC)’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Scooter Parking Permit

Riding scooters is one of the major ways of transportation for people in Taiwan to travel around the island. If you are thinking of riding a scooter on the campus of NSYSU, you are advised to apply for a parking permit. Otherwise, your scooter may be towed away.

How to Transfer Your Scooter

Information

Required Documents

  • Application form with stamps from applicants’ college and department
  • A copy of student ID
  • A copy of the international driver's license permit/Taiwan Driver's License
  • A copy of vehicle registration
  • A copy of motorcycle emission test*

*Motorcycle emission test is not required for scooters manufactured within 5 years.

Fees

NT$300/ per year

Regulation

  • Only scooters with valid parking permits are allowed to park in designated parking areas. The University is not held responsible for stolen or lost vehicles.
  • Parking permit should be placed on a visible spot on the vehicle. Vehicles with forged and/or stolen permits are towed. Lost permits can be replaced with a minimal replacement fee.
  • Driving scooters are only allowed in designated areas and are restricted within the campus zone, dormitory, and sports area.
  • Scooters should be positioned within the white grids provided. Improperly parked vehicles will be towed and fined NT$300.
  • Riders are required to wear a helmet while riding scooters and should not be riding under the influence of alcohol or illegal substances.
  • Riders who have committed more than 3 violations within one semester will have their permits revoked and will not be able to apply for the permit in the following academic year.
  • Students who have accumulated more than 3 violations in the dorm area will be expelled from the dorm.
  • Obtaining a clearance stamp from the Motor Vehicle Regulation Office is part of the Leaving Procedure.

Procedure for Redeeming Towed Scooter

If your scooter is towed...

Office Hours on Weekdays

  1. Vehicle Management Office (1F of Administration Building)

    Bring along your student ID and vehicle registration and pay your fines(NT$300).

  2. Security Station at the university’s back gate (For exact location, please refer to Appx 1/ Campus map )

    Present your receipt to the guard to claim your scooter.

Non-Office Hours

  1. Security Station at the university’s back gate (For exact location, please refer to Appx 1/ Campus map )

    Bring along your student ID and vehicle registration, write down your personal info, pay your fines (NT$300) and you can claim your scooter directly.

  2. Vehicle Management Office (1F of Administration Building)

    Collect your receipt during office hours.
