On the April 20 edition of NPR’s All Things Considered, Rob Schmitz reported on threats to academic autonomy in Hungary, where Prime Minister Victor Orban has actively dismantled democratic institutions including the courts, media, civil society, and universities. As a foreign university, Central European University was forced to move its degree programs from Budapest to Vienna, while higher education institutions that remained received financial support only by accepting federal control and surveillance. Schmitz wrote: "In spite of everything," says CEU Budapest Pro-Rector Laszlo Kontler, "we are determined to continue useful work here with all civil society stakeholders, academic partners that have been accumulated over three decades, and with whom the connections are not completely lost."
