National Sun Yat-sen University welcomes international scholars for teaching and academic research. The information below outlines eligibility, visa routes, invitation-letter procedures and practical arrangements before arrival.
Who can apply
- Visiting scholars must not hold student status.
- The primary purpose of the visit must be teaching or academic research.
- The maximum duration of a visit is one year.
Students should instead refer to the Exchange Students or Visiting Students information.
Visa and employment
The appropriate application route depends on whether the scholar will have an employment relationship with NSYSU and on the intended length of stay.
With employment
Regardless of the length of stay, NSYSU must obtain an official approval letter from the Ministry of Education before the scholar applies for a visa, in accordance with the Employment Service Act.
No employment
Up to 6 months
The scholar should obtain an official invitation letter from NSYSU and apply for a Visitor Visa.
No employment
6 to 12 months
The host department or faculty must obtain an official approval letter from the Ministry of Education. The scholar then applies for a Resident Visa with the approval letter and required documents. An Alien Resident Certificate must be obtained within 30 days after entry; refer to the National Immigration Agency.

Submit the seal application
The NSYSU host department or faculty submits the “Seal Application” through the university Single Sign-On portal.

Prepare the application form
Complete the application form and include the scholar’s full itinerary in Taiwan.

Attach supporting documents
Provide a copy of the scholar’s passport and a certificate of employment or employee identification.
Before arrival
Campus access
Temporary Wi-Fi may be requested through the host department. Contact the Network Management Division of the Office of Library and Information Services for details.
Accommodation
On-campus housing is limited, so apply as early as possible through the host department. See the Assets Management Division for short-term dormitories or the Guest House reservation website.
Insurance
Scholars must obtain overseas medical and accident insurance covering their entire stay in Taiwan.
Legal compliance
Scholars must comply with the laws of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and university regulations. Activities inconsistent with the purpose of the invitation are prohibited.
