National Health Insurance (NHI)
1. Background and Legal Regulations
According to the National Health Insurance Act, individuals holding residence permit documents and residing in Taiwan for 6 months must participate in the National Health Insurance. Residing in Taiwan for 6 months refers to the period calculated from the date of issuance of the residence permit upon entry to Taiwan, continuously residing for 6 months or having departed once for no more than 30 days, with the actual residence period excluding departure days, totaling 6 months.
2. Insurance Premium Payment Methods and Amounts
Premium: NT$826 per month . With proof of financial hardship, the Overseas Community Affairs Council will subsidize 50%, making it NT$413 per month.
Payment Method: Paid together with tuition and fees each semester (totaling NT$4,956/NT$2,478 per semester)
First Semester→Pay for September to February of the following year
Second Semester→Pay for March to August
3. During the study period, the Division of Overseas and International Degree Student Affairs serves as the insurance unit, responsible for NHI enrollment and withdrawal procedures for overseas students (including students from Hong Kong and Macau), tracking students' NHI status to ensure health insurance coverage during their studies.
4. National Health Insurance Enrollment Situations

If working part-time off-campus and the company provides insurance, please inform the Division of Overseas and International Degree Student Affairs staff and check at the beginning of each semester whether NHI fees are included in the tuition payment slip to avoid duplicate payments. *If you leave the work unit and withdraw from insurance, please inform the Division of Overseas and International Degree Student Affairs staff to transfer to school enrollment (Situation 3) to avoid affecting your medical rights. |
5. Transfer Out or Withdrawal from School Health Insurance
Situation 1: Students taking leave of absence, withdrawing, graduating, transferring, or working should go to the Division of Overseas and International Degree Student Affairs to process health insurance refunds and withdrawal procedures.
Situation 2: Students transferring from this school to another school should go to the Division of Overseas and International Degree Student Affairs to process health insurance refunds and transfer-out procedures. Present the health insurance transfer certificate issued by this school to the new school to process health insurance transfer-in procedures.
6. Reissuing or Replacing NHI IC Card
For replacement of NHI IC card due to changes in personal information, damage, loss, photo replacement, etc., please bring your residence permit and apply through one of the following methods. Processing fee: NT$200.
(1) In-Person Application at NHI Administration: Apply at the National Health Insurance Administration, Kaohsiung-Pingtung Division. Card available same day, waiting time approximately 15-30 minutes depending on site conditions. *If applying for information changes, same-day collection may not be available.
(2) Application via Post Office: Submit application at any post office branch nationwide. Card will be mailed to designated address in approximately 5-7 working days.
